Registration will take place at the Saw Mill Creek shelter near Willow Bay. Participants can park in the Willow Bay parking area. People with Celiac are intolerant to a protein called Gluten that’s found in wheat, barley and rye. So as you might imagine it severely limits what you can eat. However it’s becoming easier to find Gluten Free foods thanks to Wegman’s http://www.wegmans.com/ and other specialty food stores. This intolerance to Gluten causes an inflammatory reaction in multiple body systems ranging from mild symptoms all the way up to potentially fatal ones. The symptoms often can be vague and often are misdiagnosed, consisting usually of abdominal complaints. Vendor tents, Free Athlete post-race food, medical, free athlete massage, and merchandise are available to registered athletes. Plenty of spectators are present on course –mainly at the Start/Finish areas. The two loop Marathon out and back course is best described as moderate rolling, some flat, with a few steep hills. The most significant hills are near the ski jumps on Route 73 (once for the half marathon and twice for the full marathon) and leading up to the Olympic Oval finish in the heart of the village near the Olympic Arena (once for the half marathon and once for the full marathon). Each of these hills is approximately 3/10 of a mile long. RESULTS 2009 – Apparently they’re only going to post age group award results.
This run is by far the largest race in Syracuse, and Syracuse is the smallest city to participate in this world wide event. Annually over 6,000 runners participate in this race. A lot of companies carve out tent space in the park and hold their Summer outings in conjunction with the race. You’ll see all types of people and smell all types of food. There’s a lot of walkers in this run so don’t expect a good time. In fact you have to kind of guess your time because it’s not chip timed and it takes a while to even cross the start line after the gun. First held in 1982, the event has become such a staple in community that all four local television stations broadcast the 6:25 p.m. race start live. The live coverage actually began at dawn, with Channel 9 out at the park interviewing runners. JP Morgan Chase who holds this race all over the world donates a considerable amount of money to local charities from this event every year. There’s a lot of side competitions involving this race like team awards for time and CEO competitions and best t-shirt contests. They encouage you to park at Carousell Mall and shuttle to the park because parking is sparse near the race. You have to be listed on a “Team” to participate, and your company “Team” has to consist of at least 4 people.
There also is a 1K fun run. T-shirts to all runners. Starts and ends at the Firebarn.

Where you come to a party and a race breaks out! Some call this the best 15K in the country. They draw world class runners for this one. This year there will be a race cap of 13,000 for the 15K and 4,000 for the 5K so make sure you register early. The 1 miler is invitation only. This is the most amazing race we’ll ever see around here. Almost $50,000 in prize money, over 20 water stations, over 50 entertainment spots along the way (bands, dancers, jugglers etc.), thousands of volunteers, a great expo before the race, and an amazing post race party with free beer/food/jet flyover/band (Nick and the Nice Guys). My advice….read the race brochure thoroughly and plan well as 12,000 other runners will make your morning logistically difficult. Going to the Expo before will give you a chance to drive around the area to make a plan of attack and see where you can catch the shuttle buses. 4 areas of Utica compete for your vote as the most enthusiastic area so folks are lined up cheering you on the whole way. Don’t expect to go for your 15K personal best with this one as you’re elbow knocking the whole way there’s so many other runners. I ran this for the first time in 2008 and it took me 11 minutes after the gun to even cross the start line there were so many runners backed up.
